Tinnitus could be weakness of kidney

Aside

Tinnitus (Ringing in the ears) could be due to weakness of kidneys, liver, spleen and stomach according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) concept.

First of all, we have to understand that the kidneys, liver, spleen and stomach mentioned above are different from the western medicine concept.  While western medicine view those as individual organ, TCM sees those as functional system (zhang & fu organ).  In LOHAS Meridian Self-Therapy Program conducted by Beacon LOHAS, the 5 element concept was described clearly.  Read more about LOHAS Meridian Self-Therapy Program here.

According to the description, Kidney is not only about managing urination but also related to ear, hair, bone, reproductive system and fearful emotion. It is also important to note that TCM view human being and disease in a very holistic (comprehensive) way. One disease could be due to a few contributing factors.  Thus, ringing in the ear could be mainly due to kidney but also involve other functional system, spleen, liver and stomach.

For our body to function at optimum health, good Qi and Blood circulation is vital.  Lacking of Qi and Blood flow to our internal organs and body parts will result in deterioration of body function, including hearing issue.  Liver in charge of storing of blood and spleen controls the blood flow. Kidney promote Qi and Blood flow to the ear.   (You can imagine Liver is like our water dam and Spleen is the water utility authority that manage the water flow. Both have to work hand in hand to ensure smooth supply of water to various housing estate).

Thus, it is vital to ensure the smooth flow of Qi & Blood to different parts of body system.   For example, in LOHAS Meridian Self-Therapy Program, participants were taught to take care of the 12 meridians (including the zhang & fu organs) in a simple and effective way through low intensity exercises and stretching.  On top of the exercise, we were taught lifestyle that helps our meridian and how to use simple and useful daily activity to improve the Qi & Blood flow.

One of the favorite things all of like is soaking our leg with warm water.  It helps promote the blood circulation and as the results, we are more relax, improve sleeping quality and also helps to improve energy level.

One simple trick to manage the ringing problem due to emotional stress, anger or anxiety is gently pull our our earlobe and massage the bone behind  our ear lobe.

It’s is also important to take care of our daily food and cut down intake of alcohol, spicy and deep-fried food as these will increase liver fire which will affect not only hearing but also other body function such as skin issues.

Do we really want to retire early?

Aside

Many people wish to retire early and sitting besides the beach to do nothing.

However, from the news article that mentioned Hong Kong people live longer, may be we got to think twice when and how are we going to retire?

Hong KOngers live longer

Some of the attribute why Hong Kongers are the top in the longest-living people could be due to the following reasons

1) Easy access to modern health care,

2) Keeping Busy

3) Traditional Cantonese cuisine

4) mahjong game.

One key attribute will be keeping ourselves busy and active.  Hong Kong does not have statutory retirement age. Many choose to work as long as possible. This keep their mind and physical body active.

Taking example of the richest man in Hong Kong, Li Ka-shing, working at the age of 84.  One shouldn’t consider retire early whether rich or poor.

Some interesting finding from Northwestern Medicine study Sleep Late = Weight Gain

According to the study
– Late sleepers consumed 248 more calories a day,
twice as much fast food and half as many fruits and vegetables as those with earlier sleep times.
According to the Author, Prof Phyllis Zee, M.D.
– “Human circadian rhythms in sleep and metabolism are synchronized to the daily rotation of the earth,
so that when the sun goes down you are supposed to be sleeping, not eating,” Zee said.
(That is why we are teaching the TCM Biological Clock & Lifestyle in Meridian Massage Comprehensive workshop)
When sleep and eating are not aligned with the body’s internal clock, it can lead to changes in appetite and metabolism, which could lead to weight gain.

The research findings could be relevant to people who are not very successful in losing weight, Zee said.

“The study suggests regulating the timing of eating and sleep could improve the effectiveness of weight management programs,” she said.

The findings also have relevance for night-shift workers, who eat at the wrong time of day related to their bodies’ circadian rhythms.

“It’s midnight, but they’re eating lunch,” Zee said. “Their risk for obesity as well as cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and gastrointestinal disorders is higher.”

In fact, there is another article mentioning that sleeping late cause hormonal changes that will induce overeating during day time.

For late sleeper, may be you can consider to do adjustment on your sleeping habit now 🙂

Food That Cures

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), some of the daily food can be considered as herbs as well, and vice versa.

One of a common food which is widely used in our daily cooking is ginger.

Ginger provide “yang” energy to the body.  In an Chinese old saying, “a male cannot afford not to take ginger within 100 days”, says a lot about the importance of ginger.

Ginger can be stirred fried with vegetable to create the nice aroma.

For somebody have flu or cold, it is good to have a bowl of porridge together with slices of ginger and pepper.  It that person perspire after that bowl of hot porridge with ginger, chances are he or she will recover sooner.

Another common remedy for cough or cold is to put two slices of ginger into coke. Heat up the coke for a while.  This serves a good drink for cough and cold.
