One of the key factors to help manage overeating or food craving, especially for people are having challenges in weight management, is their perception when they come to their favorite food. Do they have abundance or scarcity mentality when dealing with food.
Through my experiences in conducting weight management training and coaching, Ultimate Slimming Program Intensive (USPi), I have encountered many participants who had tried to control their diet stringently. However, it is no secret that stringent diet control does not help in the long run.
Many of these participants practice
‘watching my diet’,
‘control the intake of unhealthy food’,
‘cut down or avoid carbohydrate’,
‘I only allow myself to eat ______ (their favorite unhealthy food) once a month’ and the list goes on.
However, it is almost certain 90% of them are not happy with their weight or their diet after trying all the diet controlling methods. Many of them some how return to their old eating habit after months of fail attempt to lose the extra fat.
On the other hand, I enjoy my favorite food and stay slim. So are my program participants who had successfully shed of kilos within weeks.
What set them apart?
Something not so obvious but vital is about the perception we look at our favorite food. For those who had successfully practice the Four Golden Principles to enjoy food and stay slim, we have abundant mentality towards food (whether it is our favorite food or not). We always know that there are plenty of chance to have our favorite food and we are in no hurry to gobble up the food.
For those not so successful in managing their craving. Chances are they are the person who constantly deprive themselves from their favorite food. As a result, they sub-consciously developed a scarcity mentality towards those food. When there is opportunity, it is like ‘hungry ghost’ let loose. They gobble up their food even before they have time to really enjoy the food and register what they have eaten.
While they are gobbling up their favorite (and most of the time unhealthy food), they mentally or verbally told themselves below scarcity phrases
“This good food is hard to come by, I really got to indulge myself with this”
“I can only have this once, I better finished up everything”
“I hardly come to this famous food outlet, I must make sure I eat as much as possible”
These result in overeating and negative emotion such as
‘I am not discipline’,
‘I always cannot control myself’,
‘I always cannot resist food temptation’ and etc.
This negative emotion is not helping at all because it further enhances their non-supporting self-image and the vicious cycle goes on.
So the next time, when we encounter our favorite food, before we even touch the utensils, just remind ourselves, there is always plenty of chance to have good food (healthy or unhealthy), I am in no hurry to finish it up. Chances are this will diffuse the emotion of craving and over indulgence. This give us power over our food rather than the food has overpower us. Thus naturally achieving a healthy and balance (body and emotion) way of eating.
